Methods and Setting

When you artists tackle commissions (or even non-commissioned multiple pieces), what's your usual plan of attack? Do you complete one start-to-finish before hitting the next, or do you go back and forth between multiple projects at once? Do you warm up, or just dive right into it?

And what kind of conditions do you need to create? Can you work anywhere? Do you need a particular place? A certain ambience? Something on the radio? A particular time of day/week? I'm curious.

C'mon, don't be shy. :)

Hmmm, I don't normally have multiple projects on my plate though lately with the trading post and different things I've been try to get done it's come up couple times in the past few months. Though usually I try to do a picture start to finish before moving on to the next, unless I'm sending a sketch to someone for comment or approval and they don't get back to me right off, then I'll move on to whatever is next while waiting for their reply. And I do maybe 5 minutes of warm-up doodling before starting on my 'real' sketch for the day. Hehe.

And for conditions, I guess I can work anywhere though usually easier when sketching at home I think. And I hear that majority of people listen to music or tv or something in the background when drawing but for me that's like....I dunno, distracting or something. I need general quiet when sketching. Inking I do while listening to music though. :)

What about yourself?

I have project "ADD" ._. its a horrible habit of mine that I am often scattered with 5 projects at once, and work on each one when the muse fits me. luckily I have commissioners that work with me on open ended projects and the like.
for atmosphere, yes. nine times out of ten I need to be alone, in my room. for sketching I like to head into the city and go to East West bookstore (its a new age hippie metaphysical shop centered around yoga and eastern related stuff.. = Nar's heaven XD) I'll often grab a chai and listen to the instrumental CD's they have up in the cafe and sketch.
heck it got me teo freelance projects already! Im designing business cards for the reiki worker and one of the security guards wants a tattoo design! ;)
when at home I have to have music on. always. its defiantly a fueling muse. nine times out of ten its jpop or something of the like, be it cute and upbeat or slow like a ballad. sometimes instrumentals depending on the mood of the piece.

I always have several projects, paid or otherwise, going on at once. I work on them in bits and pieces, so I'm not only working on one thing one day. I like the balance between getting to work on what I'm inspired to work on in the moment, and getting my stuff done quickly. I usually prefer to be in my house to work on sketches or finished art... just sitting at my work desk dining room table, making art. Sometimes I go to Denny's to work on drafts. Back in Colorado, my friends had a game shop in Lyons, and I got to go hang out in their extremely comfortable and atmospheric game room, to draw on Fridays, and I got -so much more- done, but that's what I get for moving ;P

I don't often have much side lining, if I do it's usually one big piccy and random me sketches rather than proper drawings but right now I have 4 on the goish. One is thankfully on hold while I get the Dragon concept clear for the proper thing. They're all different as well so the one that is flat on it's face as I'm having, a can't draw humanoids, couple of days I can go to a completely different subject which is great.

All I need is Pandora on mixing between several stations of music I enjoy (European, 80s, bit of Japanese, instrumentals etc) for however long the broadcast lets me access it and no threat of a computer scan appearing and I'm perfectly happy. I do tend to save more for the evenings however as of late there's actually good TV on, I'm one of those people who'd say just a minute on artwork and still be there several hours later so don't want to risk it :)

I do sometimes game and draw (Same time if it's handheld or RPG and safe enough) but I cannot do anything writen or arty wise if somebody is trying to talk to me at the same time. I can listen but answering back gets very very messy as my concentration seems to snap yet doesn't on game-a-thons aha.
