ArtSpots Site Banner - January

(You might've already read this in the JaxPad banner post, in which this one is a near-duplicate.)

I got the okay from the spottycat in charge to go ahead with this, so I think I shall!

We are looking to have topical banners done for each site for each month. The best part of it is that you get $50 USD if your art gets chosen!

The way this will work for January, to see how it all works in practice and iron out any kinks, is this:

Draw up a rough character sketch -- I cannot emphasize this enough -- rough sketch and post it here. Try not to spend more than, say, a half hour on it. Rough rough roughs! We will all choose the one we think works well. And then the artist will go ahead and finish up the piece and then collect the prize!

So, what to draw? It must involve one or more of the cheetah (and mouse) staff. You can find a whole list here on the about page. Other than that, it's free reign! Try to focus just on the character(s), as they will most likely be placed in front of the existing logos (although depending on the drawing, we may do otherwise!)

Now, for the fine (but normal sized anyway) print. You must've been on the site for at least three months (either here, starting on the initial application date, or on JaxPad) and have artwork in your gallery. If you are brand new here, you can still participate and vote, just wait until our contest in March to enter! Artists can only win once every two years. This is so we can allow more people to get their art up.

Regarding the art: We here at ArtSpots realize that you have control over your art. However, us, the cheetahs (and mouse), are part of ArtSpots. This means that by entering the contest you grant us exclusive right to your artwork for use on our site. In short, it can be posted in your gallery here, just not elsewhere without our permission. On the flip side, it also means we cannot use your artwork for anything else without proper compensation. If we want to use it on buttons, a shirt, or in a calendar, you will be paid again, a rate proportionate to the use and agreed upon. The original (if done in real media) can of course be sold in whichever art show you wish, although we want first-buying options. All this will be covered in more detail in the contract, but that's the short of it!

So, lets get a good handful of roughs up here and get started!

Sweet beans!! This sounds like fun. =)

Just one question: can JaxPad artists submit drawings for the Artspots banner too, or should they just submit them for the JaxPad banner?

This is cool! I'll definitely participate sometime!

Are there any size/proportion specifics to keep in mind?

Also- the once-per-two years... is that per site, or is the two-year limit inclusive of both sites?

It is inclusive of both sites. Thinking about it, I should have probably put the same words here as I did in the JaxPad banner post. As the JaxPad one is limited to JaxPad artists (no ArtSpotsies!) the same holds true for ArtSpots's.

As far as size/proportions, make them big, like, at least 600 pixels high (or more!) but make sure they're understandable at about 150 pixels high. (The larger the image size, the more likely we are to use it for other things. Hint, hint.)

I'm going to assume to just draw the image in whatever composition/size we want (as long as it's a good workable size), as it'd be up to AS how they want to crop or use the image then?

And should the site name be incorporated into the image?

Correct! Although we would prefer to use the whole character. :) The positioning is more flexible. If you take a look at the logo on the main page, you will see Seurat in front of it. Think along those lines, although it could be any scene. You can include the title if you wish in the rough, and if it's neat, it could be in the final. But keep in mind it will also take more time most likely. :) In the end, it's up to you! Also, we will go back to having the characters/artwork in the logo on every page, instead of just the main page.

I'm out on vacation so I haven't had much time for arting, so to speak, but I'd love to participate! Is there a due date for January? Probably the start of the month I'd assume!

Or would all the artists that would like to contribute/participate be able to post all sketches and roughs in this thread to be entered for later months as well?

Hmm! Good question. This thread is just for January. However, if you want to have one for a future month, it could be done a couple ways. First, just do it and wait until that month to submit it. :) Or, I can try to hold onto it and submit it for you (or anyone) if you email it to me. toulouse at artspots.com

I'm still trying to see how well this works. February might be done a little differently!

I am going to aim to have sketches in by Sunday. It is looking good if you (yes, you, reading this!) happen to be the only one to submit something. ;) And then we vote on Monday.. if necessary, and go from there! It should be simple after that.

ah heck why not :)
knowing a sys admin personally; because their behind the scenes people don't notice em' as much, and they deserve appreciation too! so lets give love to da mousie and da babbage :3 doing what the dynamic duo does best!

What are the final pixel dimensions of the banner?

Drawing large is fine and good, but I like knowing that what I have will work to scale.. you say 150px tall, but how wide?

The pedantic detail needing designer who can't participate until february needs to know!

:D

W x H pls!

Ahh, Naryu that's awesome. :D

Hey, how many ideas can one person enter? I kinda wanna enter a few ideas...Should I just enter one then enter the others in future contests?

Just when hope seemed to slip from view the heavens opened up and everything fell into place!

Oh...it has to be of the staff...oh...well, there goes all my ideas *cries*

Hope this isn't too late/too dark. I have trouble seeing how dark something is with this laptop.

After some careful looking and discussion, we have decided to go with Naryu's mostly for the ease at which it can be worked into the banner. However, Tod, I think Seurat might want to talk to you about your piece at some point!

So Naryu, just ink it up and color it, and like with Kooky's, I'll start working on handling it from this end. If you have any questions, let me know!

About 350 to 500 pixels wide, since that is variable! :) And yes, looking forward to February, since I think we all know what that month holds as far as holidays.
