Vizon's Sketches

And I will begin with some random doodles I did last night. Hopefully I will get a new scanner soon so these uploads will be a little cleaner.

Well they're definitely...raw. I almost didn't post them, but as the sketch book is about posting even embarrassing stuff, and having others perhaps see common issues, I went ahead. Maybe I'll do some real life sketches next. And thanks, you two. :)

Oh well I meant raw in a good way! Hehe. Like seeing construction lines and the buildup of other people's artwork I think is really cool. And nothing to be embarrassed about there, though I get what you mean. :)

I would like to post these preliminary sketches of Vizon (see my Vizon Rok portrait in Critique and Redlines) to try to get a better understanding of what I am specifically not getting when sketching without references. I am so frustrated with myself, because I can see they are bad and wrong - too stiff and not natural looking, but despite my extensive experience with figure-drawing classes, it seems as soon as I stop taking the classes, my figures become stiff and forced again. So here are my sketches that I did at first when I decided to draw Vizon, kicked back in a chair, glaring:

I am particularly displeased with the top right sketches. I know the propped up leg is too short (as it came to the edge of the paper too soon), but it's more than that. Both sketches look like he's not really relaxed. And a lot of my sketches end up being blah like this. It really bugs me. I guess for the moment the best thing I can do is sign up for more figure drawing classes and go sketching at the zoo more. Just draw more. But if someone knows of something specifically they see in my sketches that I should be working more on, please please tell me.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but my initial reaction to the upper right sketches is that there isn't enough of a slouch in the back to show 'relaxed'. Kinda sitting more stiff-back upright and maybe the hips aren't forward enough in the chair. If you were asking how to fix it....dunno if can help there. ^.^ But the image you have over on the red-line forum looks a lot better and a much more relaxed curve in the spine.

Yeah. Maybe I just need to get back into figure drawing class again and focus on spine/hip relationships and placement. I think maybe what I'm doing is getting into the details before establishing the gist of the pose...

Thanks, Higgins! I have the day off from work unexpectedly (er...yay ice storms?), so I think I will watch these videos and see what I can learn. :)

Higgins, could you cross-post the vids you're talking about? I'm a little confused and intrigued!

Last update until after Christmas:

A beginning sketch of Jackie Noose, my brother's fictional assassin character. Still not sure what to do with her left hand. I originally had her gun there before I realized she's probably not left handed. I'm thinking maybe a grenade pin.

Another stab at Jackie's unique face. She's a forty-year-old, lean-muscled woman with a Roman nose and defined cheekbones. I think maybe the chin's a little too pointy for a woman? Well I'll see what my bro thinks. Hmmm, shoulda fixed the shading at the edge of the eye...

I was at Petco, getting litter and aspen chips for my critters and taking pictures of ferrets feet and mice for photo reference when I visited the birds and felt compelled to sketch this little guy:

Sparse update...I've been pretty busy preparing for Christmas. See you all after the holiday!

Here's the first of my daily challenge from Undying Song that is to last a week. Hopefully I'll keep up. I drew this without any references, so that's why it's such wonky weird anatomy. Something's still up with that lady's lifted leg I know.
I need to get back into figure drawing class again (sigh).

Heh! Thanks, Fru! Doodles are the one thing that will keep coming no matter what kind of art slump I might be in. Have to keep my hands busy when I'm sitting still. You should have seen my history notes back in high school, ha ha ha.
