How does one get into commissions?

I work at home right now and I find that I have a lot of time to do art.

I'd like to do commissions like I used to several years ago, but I don't know how to advertise and I'd *really* rather avoid the auction sites; it seems like the only people who bid on things there bid on adult items and I'd like to avoid that for now. Help please?

Reasonable rates, high quality.

You have some very nice art.
You can try the old standbys- furbid.ws or furbuy.com.
My soon to be sister-in-law had pretty decent luck selling commissions on Ebay.

I take most of mine through messageboards.
Just lay out a few lines. One is bound to get a bite. ^^

Marketing and self promotion is always a killer. ;)

Suggestions:
The various message boards or other communities you go to you can edit your sig-file with a "I now take character (or insert type of) commissions." and make that a link to your commissions page.

Drop an alert in LJ land, again with a link to your commissions page.

Heck email friends of yours that you know like your work and ask them kindly if they'd help you out by passing on your information. ;) I've gotten a few inquiries from friends of friends.

One way is to do art shows. I am always asked if I do commission work at shows.(working on a piece while you are there helps a lot to get people interested!)

I've wanted to do artshows and other such things as well, but don't know word one about how to go about it?

That would be an excellent article idea to be sure!! :)

deviant art, posting on forums, and being social with others helps. linking on your lj is good though I think lj is too egocentric. not that this is a bad thing but it doesn't help you network.
