Hi. I am a total newb at selling prints and I have a few (potentially stupid) questions.
1.) If someone orders one of my (hypothetical, not yet submitted) prints, how will the print get to him/her? Does Artspots send the print to them? I'm not sure I understand the process there.
We print the prints ourselves (we really ought to be calling them by their fancy name, giclees), and then ship them to the customer by USPS or FedEx, whichever is appropriate for the piece. Because we are currently a small operation, orders can take up to a week to ship since we do not have anyone currently dedicated to making and shipping them. Part of this is because we need to manually adjust an image before printing, then print it, and then sometimes let it rest under heavy objects (books) overnight. We do not charge for the adjusting, or setup, which other giclee shops usually charge between $30 and $150 to do. Before a single giclee is even made.
2.) Does Artspots pay through Paypal?
Paypal or check, both are options, and we try to pay out around the 1st of every month.
3.) What is a good way to advertise print sales? I wrote up a journal on FA and like... 6 people responded... even though I am being watched by 2,540 people. O.o I'm still new here on Artspots and I don't know how many of my DA subscribers have AS accounts.
That is a good question, and one I hope a staff member or two will strike up soon and offer some good responses.
I will say this, given what I know and have experienced with Internet store sites and research I have read on them.
Roughly 1-2% of members on a site will buy something. This holds true with a few exceptions. ArtSpots fits this very well, and is actually a smidge above, I would say closer to the 2% range.
Sending someone over from another site does pose a few problems, mainly that they have to make another account to buy something. Of those 2,450, how many are still active? How many were duplicate accounts? How many regularly read your journal? I can say that half the people who bought that giclee were already ArtSpots members, so they may or may not have even come over from FA. Also take into account that the majority of people will say they want something, but smaller percentage are those who actually follow through. There are soooo many factors here, and I am barely even scratching the surface. :)
These measurements are called metrics, and they are something that web sites analyze (or have some software do it, Google offers one for free) to figure out how to improve their site, and ultimately, traffic. We have taken the first steps here to try and help provide some down the line. Wouldn't you like to know on other sites, for example, exactly how many of your watchers look at a post (not just anyone, but those watching you) and how many of that 2,450 is still checking out your gallery images regularly? That's possible, just takes a bit of planning, and would help you better plan and achieve goals.
I am beginning to ramble, I am sorry. Some of the responsibility falls on our shoulders too, to advertise the site and get more people regularly using it. I just know, given the 1-2% figures that seem to be pretty constant over the Internet, that if we had traffic and a userbase anywhere near the other sites mentioned, not only would artists be making some serious dough from passively selling prints, artwork that they were inspired to do for themselves versus contracted work, but we would be able to keep the site going through thick and thin as well, all without having to scramble for donations. That's called having a plan, and we has one. :)
