I've never laminated anything before, so I have another question.
When you laminate the badge, after the fact, is a run-of-the-mill hole punch all you need to make the hole for the lanyard, or is there something else (is the plastic too thick for a hole punch?). Also, do you have to wait for the plastic to "cure" at all before punching a hole? Or can you punch the hole right away?

A hole puncher should be able to easily go through most laminate material, so it should be fine, depending on what kind of lanyard you're going to use. You don't really have to wait, it cools very fast. Of course, you could just use the pre-made 'pockets' where you can slip it in. There's a surprising number of options, and if you want to know them all, check with the shop assistant, they might be able to suggest methods you hadn't thought of.

Thanks, Manic. Great suggestions. I am definitely going to be one of those annoying customers at the shop, I can tell you that right now, LOL!

I punch the hole virtually immediately. A standard office punch would work just fine - it goes through laminate as easily as it would paper. One tip - leave plenty of space above the badge to avoid punching into the badge itself and compromising all of your lamination work!

Oh I was just looking around for one of those horizontal hole punches myself earlier today. Stupid things are like $40! I'm probably going to get one though, they fit around the typical badge clips better than the round hole punches I think.

The horizontal hole punchers indeed are made for badge clips, and much more advisable than the round hole punchers. I kinda assumed kynliod was talking about those, but just to clarify, get the horizontal puncher =) If you thread a lanyard through a round hole, not only will it be difficult to do, but it'll never sit straight, instead spinning around the place. If that's the only option though, punch two holes and thread it through horizontally, it behaves better that way.

Hmm, I didn't realize I needed a special kind of punch. Where do I find it?

Looks something like this:http://www.amazon.com/Strap-Plastic-Punch-Cards-Badges/dp/B0006M648E
If a store does lamination more than likely they'll have this and others.

Thanks for all the help! It's a little more complicated than I thought, but it sounds doable!

Or rather a friend of mine did for me for some art stuff I'd for him in the past. Joy! They really are over priced though. :P That's the least expensive I've found.

I got a horizontal hole punch from my boyfriend for Christmas a couple years ago and I love it. It's definitely worth the money if you're going to use the standard badge clips. I've seen some people take a regular circle hole punch and punch it in a line three times and I'm sure that could work but the clips fit a lot better with the horizontal ones :)
