Hey my boss is looking to perhaps hire another artist who can draw well (especially animals) and realistically with a limited amount of colors. If anyone's near KC or is eager for employment and wants to draw for salary pay (+benefits), let me know.

*sobs* Not good enough to bother. Hehe. Do they have to be near KC or can one do work like that from a distance?

I'm hoping myself to do it from a distance some day, as I'm not so content with KC. I'm more a mountains and wilderness gal myself and this place is full of coffee factories and trains and scary dark allies. On the plus side, it's very artsy and the flooded out bottoms warehouses have been transformed into crazy artsy studios and clubs (Dr. Sketchy's is down there). City of fountains, yadda yadda... Lots of local bands and several stadiums, and lots of studios and galleries around town to gape at First Fridays.

Overall lots of bars, bums, and in general a patchwork quilt of ghettos and mansions. So Thorn, where you're at is definitely more beautiful.

This job is more along the lines of graphic design, as I find myself drawing scenes, tropical plants, trucks, and textures as well as animals. It's great for a stable, well-paying job, but one has to sacrifice some artistic freedom to draw for a living (the boss likes things just so).
We've got Hallmark over here too, but they're pretty huge and work you pretty hard. My boss, on the other hand, handed me forty bucks the other day just because he was so happy with the anthropomorphic deer shirt I painted, saying he wanted to buy me dinner he was so pleased. It's been about a year and a half, but I think I'm finally figuring out a little better what kind of stuff he wants. And he's asking me if I know any more artists. Hence the post.

Oh yes, and we've got tornadoes sometimes. Whee! Exciting!

I'd be interested if it could be from a distance. I'm doing data entry as it is right now which is nice because I'm in school but I miss the art life :(

And yeah doesn't sound like my place to live really. And you can forget tornadoes. One of my top 10 fears and why I only lasted in the midwest 1 month.

Cool! Well location aside sounds like you have a pretty cool job and a good boss there at least. And working a stable job in that field which, from what I understand, isn't easy to find. Hehe. I guess I've given up on the idea of trying for a full-time art job myself. I don't know if I could take the stress of working project to project rather than a steady 9-5er though that's just me. Guess more of a hobby, though still a hobby I want to get really good at some point and eventually find some commission work. But I'm rambling now so... :)

Just asking for curiosity and the others (I'm a FT student so only part time Cali work for me :P) what actual job skills and reqs is your boss interested in? Also is he interested in freelance and PT/Intern work?

Good luck everyone and hope the applicants don't get blown away by tornadoes :P

Thanks, Drakenhart, for bringing this to my attention again - I completely missed Whisper Panthress's question there. Here is the answer:

He's basically looking for a graphic design person. And someone who can help with putting together cads (which is a little less creative and more technical). But I'm sure if you're a good artist and he likes what you paint, he will not keep you on cads. It's not a conventional job, so I can't say this is how it is for all companies at all. In fact, Hallmark over here hires similar staff, but they are certainly a lot more strict, nose-to-the-grind kind of production. They've laid people off recently so I'm actually fishing among those folks right now. Anyway, Photoshop is the main thing you need to know, but it really helps if you can paint and draw the traditional way as well (for more textured appearances). I use Painter at work too (I asked for it and my boss bought it. I asked for an Intuos tablet and he bought that for me too). A knowledge of animals is useful - especially marlins and deer. If you are good at drawing boats and cars and things like that it would be useful as well. It'd be helpful also if you knew something about business and the clothing industry, but it's not required at all (otherwise I'd never have been brought on). The boss liked my work, my work sells shirts, and I get paid well and get to draw all day. And recently I've been able to incorporate athropomorphism into some of the Tees.

Freelance - probably not just because it takes people a while to know what type of look he is after and he has to see your work and point and draw all over it before it is acceptable. He knows what sells - he knows what he wants, but he doesn't know how to explain it very well. So for him to try to explain what changes he wants over email would just be really frustrating for both the freelance artist and the boss (and he wouldn't have the time). If you're working here, you really have to be on site. Otherwise I'd be working from somewhere else, ha ha.
Part time/intern work - if you intend to go full time maybe. But he doesn't like to invest a lot of time and teaching and money into someone who isn't going to stick around. Which is reasonable.
