Tried a new method of painting, but in photoshop. The way Peter Paul Rubens paints his pale figures is he underpaints with green first and then layers light pink tones on top. Here's the green underpainting.

I am attempting to teach myself acrylics. I mean, actually learn how to use them properly. I keep wondering why I was such a slacker in art school. Why didn't I try harder to actually LEARN this stuff?!? This is my guinea pig. Cat. I'm actually maybe halfway through painting it already. It's very slow going right now. I think I'll be able to do it a lot faster once I have a lot more practice with it. I'm thinking I need to get better brushes, too. Tired of having my materials hold me back. This is in one of those 4x5ish moleskine sketchbooks, so there's a lot of detail to play with in a small space. I'm glad I decided to do it so small, since part of what's taking so long is getting the paint to cover everything. Slow slow. Makes it impractical for real illustrations until I learn to control it better.

I finally gave up on trying to draw the cat, and got out my copy of "Animal Faces." I'd been planning to draw tigers or something, but the first page had gorillas, and Primates are good to draw, too. I swear, eventually I'm going to try drawing every face in that book. XD

Oh, I remember those things! I remember eating them, anyway, even if I don't remember the commercial. XD ----------------------- Lately I've been putting a lot of emphasis on GETTING STUFF DONE, and not taking much time out to draw what I want to draw. So today I sat down and did some drawin'. First, I approve of drawing from life whenever possible. My cat was being a brat, though, and not looking at me. I like these sketches, though. She kept moving her head, but she'd invariably return to the same couple angles over and over. So many of these are drawn a little bit at a time, then I'd draw a bit of another angle, and then I'd go back and do a bit more of an earlier one.

I'm so slow... Here's some new stuff. Hakir, my golden tabby tiger. I made him into a little game where I cut out the weapons and put them in his paws, like paper dolls only...digital. I've not made him a new set of clothes yet. A little collage of character sketches from my "war journal" that I keep as research/references for a comic I would like to do. The story is set around a fictional RFC squadron based in Egypt(?) during World War One. At top is 2nd Liuet. Jerry Folsom, a ringtail cat and the only American in the group. Just below is Capt. Anthony Clipper, a red squirrel (not very squirrel-looking at the moment, however); everyone else is Lieut. Samuel Fletcher, the bush hyrax and the main character of the story. And yes, I'm totally unsure of what cap Fletcher wears. And I like to copy the same picture/pose... :P

Thank you both for your comments! A big part of the reason I'm putting these here is to give myself some accountability and motivation for working on it regularly, even if its only for a few minutes a day! Here's part of what I did today- the two sketchy logo ideas at the bottom are based on what was suggested to me originally. I hope to improve on the ideas, but I realized that I didn't have anything concrete from which to improve on!

Oh, thank you. :) Naws it's just photoshop line tool actually. Hehe. When I ink traditional like I use those Micron pens.

Yes! I love drawing people, but I let myself slack on it far too often. I believe you need a strong foundation in drawing both folks and animals to get better at the anthros. Now if only I could sit down and force myself to draw some motorcycles or cars or... background elements...
